IDA Cast to Help Children In Need

Just heard that the IDA cast will be amongst a host of stars appearing on BBC 'Children In Need' on November 14th. At this stage we don't know what they'll be performing or whether all twelve girls will be there, but we'll keep you posted.

This is from the BBC Press Release (note how IDA are second on the bill above Girls Aloud & Take That!)

Friday 14 November
7.00pm BBC Children In Need 2008 BBC1 – The night of fundraising from Television Centre in London, is hosted by Terry Wogan with Tess Daly and Fearne Cotton and features McFly, the I'd Do Anything cast, Girls Aloud, Take That, Leon Jackson, Boyzone, Escala, Stereophonics, John Barrowman, Il Divo, Jason Donovan, Strictly Come Dancing, Junior Masterchef, Ashes To Ashes, a musical featuring the cast of EastEnders, BBC newsreaders in Mamma Mia!, Taggart, Sugababes, Lee Mead and Denise Van Outen, the cast of Hairspray, Will Young, Sharleen Spiteri, Alesha Dixon, Russell Watson and the stars of Last Choir Standing.

Happy Halloween!!

So, one of the fantastic things about living in London is the free 'thelondonpaper'! In all fairness it's probably not the most reliable newspaper in the world, but on my way home today one particular artice caught my eye and I hope David and Andy don't mind me sharing it!

What with it being Halloween and all, someone had published an AMAZING article about haunted West End theatres! And guess which theatre was at number two of the Top 5?!

THE DOMINION THEATRE, TOTTENHAM COURT ROAD

'This 1929 venue is on the site of an old brewery, which once boasted the world's biggest beer vat. After an explosive incident on the 17th October 1814, eight staff drowned. Their ghosts are rumoured to haunt the place and an apparition of a man banging a barrel is said to have been seen. Fire doors also inexplicably open and close and a dressing room suffers from exploding light bulbs. Oh, and watch out for the black figure that has been spotted in the orchestra pit, possibly a hangover from when this site housed a leper colony.'

Fascinating yes?!

Also on the list was the Apollo Theatre, Victoria (currently showing 'Wicked'!), the Fortune Theatre, The Theatre Royal, Haymarket and the Peacock Theatre.

The Peacock Theatre had the most amazing story however: '..haunted by the ghost of a dolphin. No, seriously. Apparently, phantom squeaking is heard and the theatre suffers from random puddles of water being found around the building. Before it was a theatre, the venue was a revue bar and two dolphins were used as part of the finale to a striptease show. They died of neglect and one of them has haunted the place ever since. Staff have nicknamed it Flipper.'

So there you go!
I thought this article was brilliant and felt the need to post it, as it's loosely Rachel-related!

And this concludes my spooky Halloween post! But when you're next at the Dominion, look out for the ghosts!!

(By the way, the article also names the three West End theatres that are ghost-free. So if ghosts aren't really your thing, start planning on how to persuade WWRY to move to The Shaftesbury, Ambassadors or Wyndham's!)

Important Cast Information

We've just heard that Rachel WON'T be in the Scaramouche role from 11th to 14th November inclusive. She will however still be doing the 15th so no need to panic if you're booked for Scaramouche night!

Emma's Fan Pics

Jeez you wait for weeks for anything remotely bloggable, then three posts come along at once!

Some great pics here from Rachel's first Scara night, courtesy of Emma who was there with friends Laura and Lucy.

Thanks a million!

Dominion Cast Photos

Thanks to Emma for these photos taken recently outside the Dominion.

This superb picture may not have been on display in time for opening night, but it was definitely worth waiting for.

Hey what about this one though? 'Scaramouche -- Rachel Tucker.' Yay!

Laura's Fan Pics!

As mentioned last week, Laura was lucky enough to see Rachel's first night as Scaramouche and met her after the show as well.
She has very kindly allowed us to use some of her photos on the blog.

Remember to click on the photo for a larger version.

This is probably the best IDA related fan photo I've yet seen. Laura (pictured) was incredibly lucky to meet most of the Nancys outside the Apollo following the 'Wicked' task and this photo shows them all looking happy and relaxed.

The next photo was taken at Hyde Park following the performance.

And here are Rachel and Laura again after 'We Will Rock You' earlier this month.

And finally this one is following Rachel's first Scaramouche performance last week.

Thanks a million for these Laura -- they are really great!

Rachel Plays Scaramouche!

As we know, Rachel wasn't scheduled to play Scaramouche until November 3rd, but Laura, one of the Facebook Group members, has informed us that she was lucky enough to see Rachel as Scaramouche last night! We can only surmise that this was due to the unexpected absence of another cast member.

Laura's exact words were:

"Saw Rachels first as Scaramouche last night, SO funny! She was amazing vocally and had great comic timing!"

This is really good to hear and we want to congratulate Rachel on her first night in the Scaramouche role.

Velma Kelly Edges Poll

It was impossible to pick a winner of our poll 'Which Roles Would You Choose For Rachel?’ Elphaba, Sally Bowles and Velma Kelly were neck and neck virtually from start to finish.

However on the final day one role did edge ahead to steal victory and it was my personal favourite, Velma Kelly. Elphaba and Sally Bowles were left 2 votes behind in joint second.

Reading about the role on various websites they often describe Velma as a flashy, murderess and famous stage performer. Rachel would be so good in this role.

They usually look for a woman between 23 and 30 so Rachel would still fit the bill after her 'We Will Rock You' contract ends next September.

As we know Rachel is also a fantastic mover and that’s another reason why I think she'd be perfect for this part because the role involves intense dancing.

Hopefully this time next year we'll be going on another Team Tucker outing to see Rachel in a new role and you never know, it could be Velma Kelly.

Audio of 'No-one But You'

OK this isn't strictly ethical, but as this audio is freely available on Youtube, it seems a shame not to feature it on the blog.
Whoever posted this obviously 'borrowed' a few of their photos from the blog as well!

It's not a professional recording, but certainly illustrates Rachel's powerful and impressive vocal performance.

Coloured Lights Article + Jessie Videos

I think it's worth featuring part of an article from influential theatre blog 'Coloured Lights', concerning recent casting successes for the IDA girls.
The final five have all gone on to secure major roles in the five months since the show ended.

Niamh starred in 'Only the Brave' and is set to play 'Snow White' in Eastbourne this season, Sam is Sally Bowles in the touring 'Cabaret', Rachel is an absolute triumph in WWRY and now Jessie is heading for a major London show as well.
This little article is extremely complimentary regarding the major talents showcased through IDA and rightly so.

"Jessie Buckley: I expect the casting of Buckley will cause a great deal of excitement among her fans made during her appearances on the BBC’s ‘I’d Do Anything’. Anyone that reads this blog will know that I wrote regularly about the show, and I was a big fan of Jessie’s - however, I didn’t think she was quite ready for the West End stage back in June this year, so it will be very interesting to see how she’s come on in the last 4-5 months. It just shows that winning doesn’t matter in the BBC’s series - the 3 main runners-up (Samantha Barks, Rachel Tucker and now Buckley) have been cast in major roles, either on the West Stage or prominent touring productions."

I'm indebted to 'Coloured Lights' for giving us a major plug shortly after we started the blog and from our stat counter I know we received a large number of hits as a result.

You can read the full article here:

COLOURED LIGHTS

It's well worth taking a look at Jessie's blog today, as there are some fantastic videos of her performances at Tipperary last weekend. Included are 'Maybe This Time', 'As Long As He Needs Me', 'I Still Believe', 'We Never Said goodbye' and 'Don't Rain on my Parade.' Also featured is a great review of the show from super-fan Derrers.

Rachel Sings Happy Birthday

Thanks to Katee for finding this little Youtube video!
Idina, John and a few others helped Rachel sing 'Happy Birthday' to Andrew Lloyd Webber at Hyde Park and someone managed to capture the moment. Nice one!

It's Neck and Neck

This is just a very quick final reminder that our current poll ‘Which Roles Would You Pick For Rachel’ is coming to an end on Sunday.

If you haven’t voted yet please do so.

At the moment we have a 3 way tie for the lead so your vote could prove to be the one that decides whether it’s Elphaba, Sally Bowles or Velma Kelly that finishes victorious.

Surely it’s too late for any of the others to spring a surprise now; or is it?

A Blog for Diana!

This may sound a little strange, but I've never been a big fan of TV reality shows, with the obvious exception of IDA. And that was entirely because of the presence of a certain contestant.

So last Saturday I was flicking through the channels when X-Factor came on and I thought I'd give it a go. All the usual sub-Karaoke performances were present and correct, but suddenly there was somebody different. A crazy-haired girl who reminded me a little of a young Kate Bush took the stage and tackled the U2 classic; 'With Or Without You.' And incredibly she succeeded! And even more incredibly the judges loved it!

Diana Vickers was correctly described by Louis Walsh as 'a breath of fresh air.'
She strolled through the public vote and next week she'll be performing a Michael Jackson song.

Always ready to encourage interesting and different new talent, we've set up a blog for Diana and wish her all the very best for Saturday.

Rachel's charity work continues...

I have no idea how Rachel manages to find the time however; tomorrow morning Rachel and Fiance Guy will be running the London Royal Parks Half Marathon (Hyde Park+Green Park+St James Park) it takes place on Sunday October 12th at 10am.

They are running as a team, and you can sponsor them through either UNICEF UK: For 60 years UNICEF has been the world's leader for children, working on the ground in 156 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments. For UNICEF please go to http://www.justgiving.com/guyandrachel

Or Battersea Dogs & Cats Home: Battersea Dogs & Cats Home's vision is of a world where all dogs and cats are in caring and permanent homes. The Home is a charity that aims never to turn away a dog or cat in need of our help. We reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners and, when we can't do this, we care for them until new homes can be found for them. For Battersea Dogs and Cats Home please go to http://www.justgiving.com/rachelandguy These are both highly worthy causes, that merit and deserve support, so please dig deep and give whatever you are able.

"This is our first half marathon, and we are both really excited about doing it, and we are looking at it as training for the London Marathon in 2009 which we are both keen to do; Guy ran the 2005 London Marathon slowly, and Rachel used to be an enthusiastic cross country runner."

I'm sure if anyone wanted to come down and support them they would be more than welcome.

Good Luck Guys!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE - 2pm 12th Oct

Rachel and Guy successfully ran the half marathon today in 2hrs 20 mins which was around their estimated finishing time. They are really "chuffed". I'm not sure yet how much they managed to raise for their charities but when I do you will too. They are now off to spend the rest of the day in a spa retreat in essex; chilling out and having a well earned rest.

WELL DONE !!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

David says: BRILLIANT result guys!!!! Eight shows plus a half marathon in a week! Rachel and Guy deserve our huge respect.

I'm pleased to say that five Team Tucker members have donated so far, and there's still time for anyone else who would like to give a little to these worthy causes.

If you are unable to donate via credit or debit card, please email me at dlar193076@aol.com and I'll sort out alternative payment methods for you.

Poll Update + Hyde Park Podcast

Well the poll has only be running for about 4 days – we’re not even half way through – but we’ve already had over 60 votes and things are starting to take shape.

We appear to have three clear front runners – Sally Bowles (Cabaret), Velma Kelly (Chicago) and Elphaba (Wicked) – that are running pretty much neck and neck. If this trend continues, Rachel may just have to play all three. Do I hear anyone complaining?

However considering there is still over a week to go it’s probably too early to discount the closest 3 challengers. Nancy (Oliver) currently lies in fourth and is just 8 votes off the lead; I’ve heard a certain ALW voted for this one. Sorry too little, too late. Scaramouche (We Will Rock You) is just a couple of votes behind in fifth and if you fancy an outside bet Fantine (Les Miserables) is still within striking distance in sixth.

As it’s so close I thought it might be fun to try and predict which roles will finish in the top 4 and in what order. Here’s my prediction:

1st Velma Kelly (Chicago)
2nd Elphaba (Wicked)
3rd Sally Bowles (Cabaret
4th Scaramouche (We Will Rock You)

I’m afraid there are no prizes on offer this time but if you want to have a guess just leave a comment and if you haven't voted yet, don't forget to do so. Every one counts!

Also I hope everyone enjoyed the Hyde Park broadcast on Radio 2. The good news is that it's now available as a podcast right here:

Major News for Jessie!

Given Jessie's recent triumphant performances at the Rose of Tralee festival and Hyde Park, it's no surprise that she has emulated Rachel by landing a role in London Theatre.

She is set to star in Trevor Nunn's production of the Stephen Sondheim musical 'A Little Night Music' at the Menier Chocolate Factory. The production will run from 22nd November to 8th March 2009, giving Jessie's many fans ample opportunity to see her perform.

I know Rachel will be delighted with this news, and we at the blog would like to congratulate Jessie and wish her every success in this exciting new chapter of her career.

SHOW AND STAY

A Quick Reminder...

This friday evening, at 7:30pm, Andrew Lloyd Webber's 60th Birthday Party is being played on BBC Radio 2.

As one of the lucky ones who managed to get to this event, I'd really recommend it -- I'm sure it sounds absolutely fantastic! Really was one of the best evenings of my life!

One thing: I'm sure they've edited John Barrowman's presenting very well, so it sounds extremely smooth.. It was NOT like this at all! Anyone who was there can tell you just how many times he had to do some of the links -- he kept laughing!

David Says: Thanks for this reminder Rosie -- also worth a peep at Andrew Lloyd Webber's Official Site for some great Hyde Park photos. Unfortunately Rachel only appears in one (above) but there are some great shots of the other performers.

A Non-Rachel Fan's Opinion

With absolutely no permission whatsoever, I'm publishing this extract from a blog by someone called Kenny Baxter. Kenny obviously has no particular knowledge of Rachel and isn't a fan, which makes his opinion all the more valid. He is a regular visitor to 'We Will Rock You' and this is his opinion of the new cast member:

"Meat – Rachel Tucker – I am not by any stretch of the imagination a fan of reality shows, or the method of casting, but sometimes it finds a real talent, this year “I'd do anything” has done just that, with several people, seeing Niamh and Sarah in Edinburgh was good enough, but this is the west end, a whole different quality is needed to remain consistent. Rachel brings to stage an Irish meat, who is bubbly, sexy, lively, and a fantastic singer. A brilliant reflection on her performance for her to get a good review from me, I normally take a while to settle into a meat, but Rachel has entered into the top of my favourites list very quickly. Only one fault to her performance was forgetting parts of a dance, and not doing quite a long enough “yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaah” when first coming onto stage, but these are things which can only be improved upon."

Get Voting!!

Well our choice - or should I say your choice - for the next blog poll seems to have gone down really well because we've been inundated with suggestions for what other roles you'd like to see Rachel in.

As you may have noticed the poll has now been added so get your votes in for your favourites.

Due to Rachel's incredible talent and versatility you have a lot of roles to choose from.

Elphaba (Wicked)
Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady)
Sally Bowles (Cabaret)
Donna Sheridan (Mamma Mia)
Velma Kelly (Chicago)
Maureen (Rent)
Mary Poppins (The Musical)
Mary Magdalene (Jesus Christ Superstar)
Nancy (Oliver)
Scaramouche (We Will Rock You)
Killer Queen (We Will Rock You)
Maria (Sound of Music)
Carmen (Fame)
Narrator (in Joseph)
Fantine (Les Miserables)
Anita (West Side Story)
Lady Marmalade (Disco Inferno)
Julia (Wedding Singer)
Holly (Wedding Singer)
Miss Adelaide (Guys and Dolls)
Nellie (South Pacific)

We actually had a number of other suggestions but we felt having 21 different options was going to make your decision difficult enough.

In fact because we think it's an almost impossible choice to have to make we've set up the poll to accept multiple answers.

Try not to vote for all of them LOL.

Great New WWRY Review

I think it's fair to say we've given Rachel's opening night pretty good coverage, so I'm really delighted that we now have our first fan review of a more recent performance.

This was very kindly sent to us by the lady known on the Internet Forum as 'Gingerbreadkitten.' One of the great things about the IF is the user-names (and the icons!) But I digress.

Perhaps the best thing about GBK's review is what happened BEFORE the show. Her account really brought a smile to my face -- this is just SO Rachel!

Right I'll shut up now:

"Until yesterday, ‘We Will Rock You’ was on the shrinking list of currently running West End musicals which I hadn’t seen. I’d heard about the show, but had never ventured to enter the Dominion theatre, although I admit to investigating the location of the stage door a few months ago when I found out that Rachel Tucker was cast in it. Despite my preparation, I’m amazed to say that I never needed to know where the stage door was, for a reason which you’ll find out shortly.

By one o’clock I was in the Starbucks near the Dominion Theatre, complete with my TKTS ticket for the matinee performance (a bright yellow – very appropriate! ). Sadly my sister and I hadn’t managed to get a table by the window (we’d hoped to look out for a particular actress if she happened to pass by on her way to the stage door) and were seated upstairs. Obviously I was incredibly excited to see Rachel in the show, especially after reading so many star-struck reviews about her opening night. And guess who was the last person to gush to me about how great the show was before I saw it myself?

I went downstairs to order, and as I was making my way towards the end of the queue, I saw someone with brown hair and very blue eyes waiting for another person to collect their napkins from the counter. At this point I froze, and I hate to think what expression was on my face at that moment, but somehow I managed to pluck up the courage to catch her eye and say hi as she was heading towards the exit. To repeat what everyone else has said in their accounts of meeting her, she really is the sweetest person! I don’t know how much of what I said she could actually understand, but I told her that I was seeing the matinee that day, that she was amazing in I’d Do Anything, and that she should have been Nancy. I hope she was flattered and not scared , but she seemed excited that I was seeing the show.

As I was asking her to sign my ticket however, I remembered that my sister was upstairs and would most likely murder me if I returned to tell her that I had met and spoken to Rachel. I was a bit embarrassed as I briefly explained this to Rachel, and I asked her if she would be coming out of the stage door after the matinee. Now, she really didn’t have to even confirm that she would be outside the theatre after the show at all, but instead she actually offered to go up to the first floor of Starbucks and sign my sister’s ticket as well! She had a show starting in an hour and a half and I feel a bit guilty because at some point the person who had been with her before vanished , but I’m still so amazed and grateful that she did this, just for a fan! She asked us if we’d seen We Will Rock You before and when we told her we hadn’t, she exclaimed how amazing it was, and I think her words were ‘it will blow your mind’.

Needless to say, by the time we were sitting in our seats in the theatre I was already ecstatic! The show itself was certainly different from any other musical I’d seen, and from the moment it started you could tell that the whole audience was loving it, clapping along and cheering all the way through. The rest of the cast is great, although I admit to getting a little impatient for Rachel to enter the stage, but at least I knew for sure that she was somewhere backstage! Finally though she appeared from beneath the stage, looking perfectly at home in her let's just say unconventional costume . And I have to say that she was every bit as amazing as I was certain she would be, and better! As biased as I’m bound to be, I have no doubt that even if I hadn’t been a fan of hers before, I would have recognised Rachel as the star of the show. She just has so much stage presence, and even in the second act when she wasn’t the focus (although she should have been!), I found it difficult to watch anyone else. Even when the lights were off her and she was one of many, she was still so easy to spot onstage!

No One But You was definitely the highlight of the show for me, her rendition was absolutely stunning, and her voice is so powerful! It’s her acting though, which really makes her so incredible! If I hadn’t known she was new to the role, I could have believed she’d been playing it for years, the character was so well developed and yet everything she did was still spontaneous and totally believable. She just seemed so perfect for the role and her performance really was flawless, my only regret is that she didn't have more to do. Even so, everything she did was so full of energy and you could tell she was loving every second. Now, I'm even more baffled as to how she didn't win the role of Nancy, but I suppose it really was a blessing in disguise as now she is performing 8 shows a week on the West End months before she would have done otherwise. She truly was born to perform and We Will Rock You is very lucky to have her in the cast!"

It’s a kind of magic for our Rachel

Rachel was interviewed by the Belfast Telegraph after making her West End debut last week. The article is published in this morning's edition.

BELFAST TELEGRAPH

I've actually copied the article and posted it below because it's a great read and I don't want any of you to miss it.

Belfast’s I’d Do Anything star tells Maureen Coleman of her joy at landing a meaty role in smash-hit Queen musical We Will Rock You

Saturday, 4 October 2008

Rachel Tucker is a firm believer in the old adage “if it’s for you, it won’t go by you”.

Though bitterly disappointed when she failed to make it to the final of the BBC talent search I’d Do Anything, Rachel took a philosophical approach to the knock-back and decided fate had other plans for her.

It wasn’t the first time she’d been let down when she didn’t land a role. Last year she auditioned for the part of Meat in the West End musical We Will Rock You, but was unsuccessful.

But it seems the role of Meat was made for Rachel after all. Fast forward 12 months and the 27-year-old is belting out Queen songs on a West End stage every night. And this time she didn’t have to audition — they came looking for her.

Everything, according to Rachel, happens for a reason.

“Mum is always saying to me ‘if it’s for you, it won’t go by you’ and I see that now,” she says.

“Of course I would have loved to play Nancy, that’s why we all took part in the show after all, but I’ve no regrets whatsoever. I landed a fantastic role in the West End and I’m loving it.

“Last year I actually auditioned for the same part and was pipped at the post. I guess it was just a case of bad timing. This year they asked me to go for it. That’s brilliant. I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do, sing on a West End stage.”

This week Rachel made her We Will Rock You debut, supported by dozens of friends and family who had come to cheer her on.

It’s a musical set in the future in a world where music is produced by machines and a revolution is underway to bring about a change. It features 32 of Queen’s best-loved songs and is based on the book by British comedian Ben Elton. Arlene Phillips, one of the judges on Strictly Come Dancing, is the show’s choreographer.

Among the crowd who turned out on opening night were I’d Do Anything winner Jodi Prenger and Scottish finalist Ashley Russell. The girls still keep in touch and Rachel is delighted to see them all do well.

“Cleo [Royer] is in Dirty Dancing and Tara [Bethan] is narrating Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat and has been getting great reviews. What happened with I’d do Anything is that a lot of the girls who went off early didn’t really get to show off their skills to their best ability,” she says.

“All the girls who took part were looking for proper careers, not just quick fixes and they’re all doing really well now. I’m thrilled for all of them.”

Many of Rachel’s relatives were in the audience too — including a large contingent from Coventry.

“The family was over from home and a coach load of about 30 relatvies came down from Coventry,” she says.

“I can’t express how I felt, it was unbelievable. The way I got through Nancy each week was by switching off and not thinking about the people in the audience and that’s what I did on opening night of We Will Rock You.

“If I’d thought about everyone out there, I would have been a wreck. I just concentrated on the show and on Ian, who I’m teamed up with.

“Afterwards, Ben Elton came up to my dressing room and gave me a big hug. And I’ve been told Brian May can’t wait to see the show. The feedback has been awesome. It’s a dream come true for me.”

Rachel was born into a family of performers. Her father Tommy ‘Tucker’ Kelly sang from an early age and performed on the Black and White Minstrel Show with his father. One of Rachel’s earliest memories is singing on stage at the Dockers’ Club in Belfast with Tommy.

“It was my aunt’s 60th birthday and I sang a few songs, Stupid Cupid and Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” she says.

“Then I got asked back to sing with my dad. So I’ve always been a show off. It’s in the blood.”

The youngest of four siblings, Rachel is close to all of them, particularly her brother John, who has been ill all his life with kidney problems.

“John still lives at home with mum and dad,” she says. “He’s very proud of me and has been a great supporter of me. He keeps me going about me being his famous sister.”

After attending Little Flower school on the Somerton Road in north Belfast, Rachel did a Performing Arts course at Belfast Institute of Further and Higher Education (BIFHE).

“The staff at Little Flower really encouraged me,” she says.

“I wasn’t academically gifted but they saw that I wanted to perform and they pushed me. Two teachers in particular, Mrs O’Connor and Miss Hart, were phenomenal.”

Before she had a chance to finish her course at BIFHE, Rachel landed a role in the hit musical Rent.

“The teachers came down to Dublin to see me in Rent and marked my performance as part of my diploma,” she says.

“I took a year out then, did some panto, took part in Star For A Night and then went to London to audition for college. The course started in September, so I went off to Camp America to teach drama over the summer.”

Rachel returned to London where she studied at the Royal Academy of Music.

Rachel’s first proper job was touring with the musical The Full Monty. It brought her back home to Belfast for two weeks, when the show ran at the Grand Opera House.

“I had a ball and I got to see the men stripping every night,” she jokes.

It wasn’t long after this that she met her partner, 44-year-old Guy Retallack.

“He was directing the musical Tommy and I was in it,” she says. “We went on tour and we got together. We’ve been together four years now and it’s great. I’ve no problem with the age difference at all.”

In fact, the relationship is so great, the pair are planning to marry next year.

“It’s all sorted. We’re going to get married at St Anne’s Cathedral and have our reception at the Dunadry Hotel,” she says.

“There was no question that it would be anywhere other than Belfast. I’m a family girl and wanted it to be at home.

“We live in London right now and love it, but never say never. Who knows, maybe one day we’ll come home. Guy loves Belfast.”

And Rachel is looking forward to starting a family.

“I’m really excited about the prospect of having kids,” she says. “But I don’t think we’ll do it straightaway. We’d both love to see a bit more of the world, maybe go on tour in Australia or America.”

Taking part in I’d Do Anything has opened many doors for the pretty brunette and helped her overcome any self doubts she may have had.

“I fee a lot more confident now about the future,” she says. “Everything’s turned out so well. Last year wasn’t great but this year has been fantastic. Sometimes I still find it hard to believe that all this has happened to me.”

While her heart will always remain in theatre, Rachel admits she would love to try her hand at a television role.

“I class myself as an actress first and foremost, although most people think of me as a singer,” she says.

“I’d really love to have a go at television, something like Holby or Casualty. That would be great.”

But her biggest hope — and one she’s almost terrified of voicingfor fear it could be dashed — is to star on Broadway.

“My absolute, absolute ambition is to go to Broadway but I don’t want to say too much about it incase I upset my guardian angel,” she said.

“Nothing would top that for me, nothing. To star in the West End has been a dream come true. Maybe Broadway could be a possibility too.”

What Other Roles Would You Choose For Rachel?

Now you may remember a few weeks back we made a post asking you to choose our next poll.

LINK

Well that was fantastically bad timing on our behalf as it came just before the Proms, Hyde Park and Opening Night so in the end we decided to shelve it until things calmed down.

We're expecting October to be a fairly quiet month and therefore feel it might be a good opportunity to try again.

Despite our poor timing we still received some terrific ideas, the most popular and our personal favourite being "What other roles would you like to see Rachel in?"

I'm sure we all agree that Rachel has the talent and versatility to play almost any role and we could even include 2 from 'We Will Rock You', Scaramouche - for which Rachel is currently understudy - and Killer Queen.

Before we add the poll we'd like you to send us all your suggestions for what you'd like to see Rachel in next.

Simply leave a comment on this post or send us an email listing the show and characters name that you think would be perfect for our girl.

Happy Birthday Karen!!!!

Shortly after Andy and I set up the blog, I contacted Karen who was running Rachel's IDA Facebook Group. She turned out to be not only a close friend of Rachel's, but also one of the stars of the Wizard of Oz production in Belfast's Lyric Theatre. In fact we had briefly met before when Karen induced a near heart attack by appearing from a side door during the show, right beside where I was sitting. Thanks for that.
Karen played the dual role of Glinda and Auntie Em and had proved a big hit with my daughter, who gave me full permission to work with her on the blog. Though I should perhaps mention that I would have done so anyway.

Karen proved to be an absolute God-send. As well as providing fascinating material for the site, including backstage photos, great articles and the priceless Annie video, she was also able to give us invaluable information on Rachel's early career and provide a vital link to Rachel herself. Her contributions and advice have been absolutely vital to our success.

But that's not all. Karen is also a highly versatile and talented performer. In addition to her myriad theatrical roles, she is a beautiful singer and we were blown away by her performance in the Abba Legends Show in Killarney last August. Her solo rendition of 'The Winner Takes It All' is worth the price of admission alone.

But most of all Karen is a very special person to know. She not only put on a terrific performance at Killarney, she made us all feel incredibly welcome both before and after the show.

She is never too busy to answer a panicky email or dispense some good advice. Time and again she has been there when I most needed her. Her many attributes include a great sense of humour, complete honesty and absolute loyalty to her friends. Rachel, Richard, Matt, myself and a hundred others are incredibly lucky to have this lady in our lives.

I am very proud to call her my friend.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KAREN!

Rachel Nominated for Theatre Award

'The Stage' have announced today that Rachel is being nominated for a Theatrical Management Association Theatre Award for her starring role in 'The Wizard of Oz'. The category is 'best performance in a musical' and other nominees include Brian Conley for 'The Music Man' and Kathryn Evans for 'Sunset Boulevard.' Winners will be announced on October 26th at the Hampstead Theatre.

I may be ever so slightly biased, but having seen Rachel first-hand in the role (twice), she fully deserves this accolade.

You can read the full article here:

Thanks to both Lindsey and Andy for spotting this so quickly and it's also a great opportunity to feature an Oz photo!

Opening Night -- A New Perspective

When we started this blog, I never imagined that Andy and I would ever meet each other, never mind anyone else. What has transpired has been an embaressment of riches.

To add to the roll-call of wonderful people I've met to date, I'd like to introduce a lady who prefers to be known simply as JB. A leading light in the Buckley Brigade, she is also an ardent admirer of our girl. She has already provided us with a touching and witty account of her meeting with Rachel at Hyde Park, as well as contributing a literally jaw-dropping review on Jessie's blog of Miss Buckley's beautiful solo.

I had the great pleasure of meeting JB at Rachel's opening night and she has very kindly agreed to give us her thoughts on the evening. Once again her words are both thought-provoking and entertaining.

Put the Kettle on please…

Firstly thank you, for being ever helpful, friendly and welcoming, especially my sincere thanks to David and Andy,Karen, also Rosie, Eleanor… and all of you ‘shiny happy people on T.T.’ Ms Tucker you should be proud, very proud ! By small way of return thanks to David and the team, I ’pen’ some thoughts. Not exactly hot off the press though…

I must confess, hanging my head in shame, after having the ticket on my kitchen shelf for months on end, I’d actually made no effort, what so ever, to find out more about the show !
I appreciate many genres of music but in honesty would rather swap Rock Opera for Grand Opera,Queen, for Puccini. More importantly, Rachel’s voice was all I really wanted to hear. In addition, that ‘good egg’, was going to knock everyone for six on her opening night, and along with sharing the evening with some special friends, it was always bound to be good crack! (pardon the pun).Sometimes it’s good not to have preconceptions or expectations of an evening like this,(that’s my excuse for pleading ignorance).

You’ve all seen the opening night shots and read some fabulous accounts of the show, so to summarise…
That’s, Mad Max,Tina Turner, Circus Archaos,Toyah Willcox, the best of Oxfam chic, Vivienne Westwood, 80’s Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Puck casting his most mischievous spells, all draped in Agent Provocateur, on a velvet sofa -throw in a stick of dynamite and explode…( pray WWRY costume designer never ever gets to see this ).These were just the aesthetics, and buried somewhere beneath all the ‘clobber,’ was that little gem Rachel, a powerhouse of enthusiasm, with her bright eyes sparkling. This was where the real explosion came, from within-Rachel was completely in her element, a little bundle of potential and energy. It was exhausting and inspiring to watch.
What was all that fuss and nonsense over, ‘can you sustain six nights a week’ business in IDA? I can only imagine and guess, that playing Nancy in Oliver, in comparison, might be like playing the 100 years part of the Sleeping Beauty. Jodie, over to you on that one, I am now walking on thin ice! I do still recommend the foot cream though-Rachel, ask David.

I mentioned being unprepared for what to expect, which had it’s down sides-When Rachel stepped up to sing ’Only the Good Die Young’ the lyrics hit a very personal note, and combined with the passion, sincerity of the delivery, the tears in those piercing blue eyes and power in her voice; after that, I don’t think I could ever handle hearing Jessie sing this, and for once I cannot find words.

In the end when curtain was on its final way down, I haven’t cried with laughter so much since the week before at Hyde Park seeing ‘those two’ do the bump!
Can you ever imagine the vibe and chemistry between Rachel and Jessie in the same production ? God help the director…’The Boys in The Photograph’ -now there’s a thought…and a full house every night ! we know it’s already crossed your mind Sir Andrew.

Yesterday whilst on the M25, scanning something decent to listen to on the radio, ‘Radio Gaga’ blasts out, bringing vivid memories, and a little grin. A return visit on the 15th ? My traditional Christmas shopping ‘fest’ that weekend, may become significantly more expensive. One regret, I didn’t get to say bon voyage to some wonderful people, mostly to someone about to begin an exciting new chapter of their life, the next day at University and wish them all the luck in the world…it’s getting cold now, you’ll need your cardi !

Milk no sugar ! Thanks
jb
