Jonah Platt chats to Rachel in #FiyeroTime

Videos from The Last Ship

So for all you who've been dying to see snippets of Rachel on Broadway we've stumbled upon some cheeky video clips of her duets from the show, on youtube. We suggest you watch them while you can, just in case they get taken down.

While we have you here, we thought we'd finally managed to get the video from Fallon on to the internet for you,  but it only lasted a few moments. NBC is mighty good at finding their stuff on Youtube. So while we still try to figure that out for you. There is a video of Rachel's "If You Ever See Me Talking To A Sailor" from Broadway for you to enjoy..

We know that cheeky videos like this are so naughty... and do not any anyway condone them but we can't help but be grateful after the fact because well without them, we'd never have seen these gorgeous clips from such a stunning show.

Honestly how much do we wish The Last Ship would play here in the UK? It has to be done.
Had the privilege of seeing Sting! perform the songs from the show in their entirety over the weekend & I just simply can not express how beautiful this music is. We've all listened to the album (Any one who hasn't yet, consider us glaring at you & click this link to rectify that) & know it's gorgeous but actually hearing that music live on stage with a packed house was something else entirely. I could probably go on for days about it, but this is a Rachel Tucker fan blog, so i'll leave it there. Except to say it's no bloody wonder Sting & Rob Mathes have been nominated for Tony's for best original music & lyrics & best orchestration. So well deserved & we have everything crossed for them for the win.

Songs in the Quay of Life @ 54 Below

On March 2nd Rachel appeared with her fellow Last Ship mates to perform at "Songs in the Quay of Life," an evening of seafaring songs to benefit Wallsend Boys Club. When the concert was originally announced Rachel wasn't on the bill but the week before the gig, she tweeted to confirm that things had changed and she was going to be able to make it, so off she flew to join the crew.

From what we've seen so far it looks like it was an incredible evening, filled with talent & beautiful music. We've been paying close attention waiting for videos, and although some were up very quickly, we were waiting for a fellow fan to send a few cheeky snaps, for official photography & official video to be released before giving you guys a mega run down of all things "Songs in the Quay of Life."

A gorgeously haunting arrangement of Fields of Gold from the company of The Last Ship, including Rachel. The cast sung this song after their final show on Broadway for the last 'Saturday Night Shout' so I dare say it has special meaning for them all & they really do sing it with such heart, it's just gorgeous.

Another stunning song 'Elysium' written by Dawn Cantwell. Performed by the ladies of The Last Ship, lead by the incredible Shawna Hamic with Alyssa DiPalma, Rachel Tucker & Dawn Cantwell.
There is another video with slightly different angle here.

We've also been sent some snippets from Jennifer Greenfield too, on the off chance the show wasn't being filmed, we had to have a minion on hand to do our bidding & can't thank her enough for all her help & updates about the gig. So thank you lovely. Check out some of her photos below too.

MaryFlynn on Tumblr has put up audio files to stream of Shiver Me Timbers & Practical Arrangements  & she's also shared some pictures on her Tumblr as well.

We also saw this lovely shot from Liza Horan on Twitter.

Also while we have you here, can we remind you about Rachel's upcoming gig "Back From Broadway" at the St James Theatre... and in case you missed this piece of news, Rachel's added a matinee, so anyone who was concerned about not making it home from an evening show, now has the chance they needed, so getting booking people, it's a show not to be missed.

Sting Joins Cast of The Last Ship

On 9th December 2014 Sting joined the cast of The Last Ship, for a strictly limited run in the show. We've found a few photos from curtain of his first night in the role of 'Jackie White' previously played by his good friend Jimmy Nail.

(Of course this image is from The Last Ship's Facebook page, on the 9th of Dec)

Video footage from the curtain call of Sting's first show of The Last Ship.

Images below are from Gettys Images check out the rest of the gallery for a few more shots from Sting's debut.

Massive Congratulations to Sting for his debut.

While we're talking about Sting, we'd like to congratulate him on his Kennedy Center Honors medal. What an achievement. We hear the cast of The Last Ship made a crazy trip after their show, to be there to congratulate & perform for him..

According to Wikipedia "The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions toAmerican culture. The Honors have been presented annually since 1978 in Washington, D.C., during gala weekend-long events that culminate in a performance honoring the Honorees at the Kennedy Center Opera House."

Below is a video of President Obama's speech at the Kennedy Center Honors, talking about this years honorees.

Apparently the show will be aired on 30th December in the US, so we'll keep you posted when video appears. Not sure yet if Rachel joined the cast in Washington, but we'll let you know.

Behind the scenes of "The Last Ship" Cast Recording

We frankly can not wait to get our paws on this album, to finally have Rachel's glorious vocals on an 'Original Cast Recording.'

Radio Interview with Sting... featuring Rachel

So it seems we missed this last week, but thanks to a fan on twitter, we've finally seen it. It was posted on WNYC.org on the 25th of Nov 2014..

An audio interview from The Leonard Lopate show, with Sting, joined by Fred Applegate & Rachel Tucker. The interview starts with a lovely clip from the show sung by Rachel before delving into some interesting questions to Sting, Fred & Rachel. Give it a listen below guys.
"16 Grammy winner Sting tells us about his debut as a Broadway composer in "The Last Ship" a new musical inspired by his own childhood. In a close-knit English seafaring town, life revolves around the local shipyard. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future, and sets out to travel the world. He returns home years later, only to find the shipyard's future in grave danger.Fred Applegate and Rachel Tucker, who star in the show, join us in the studio. The Last Ship is playing at the Neil Simon Theater."                                                                                                                  WNYC.org

Now then we couldn't very well do an update with out a picture of Rachel now could we? How's about we share THAT picture which had us all very jealous of Rachel, you know the one we're talking about.. you know from that time when she met Meryl Streep... *jaw on floor*

(This last one's a little grainy, but click here for bigger but watermarked image..)
"Ahoy, Meryl! Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep boarded The Last Ship at the Neil Simon Theatre with Sting and his crew on November 25, 2014."                                                                                                           Photographer: Bruce Glikas ©  Broadway.com
We are ever so curious to know how Rachel reacted & frankly we want to know what Meryl thought of the show?

Also just in case you've missed it in the news lately.... STING is officially joining the cast of The Last Ship for a strictly limited run from Dec 9th - January 10th 2015,
Thought we'd share this video from CNN reporting on the news, as it feature's lots of the great clips from The Last Ship, with Rachel.. I mean Rachel on CNN.. we kinda feel like that's a big deal..

Also check out the teaser trailer  for Stings appearance in the show, below.. doesn't feature Rachel, but the fact of the matter is, Rachel is now going to be properly sharing the stage with STING... we assume she's just as excited about that as we are.

Fan Review - The Last Ship - Charlotte Bois-Pursey ( @cep44 )

This review comes from Charlotte Bois-Pursey or @cep44 if you're a twitter user :)

Spoiler Alert: This is a review of Rachel Tucker in The Last Ship and may contain spoilers for some readers.

As soon as I heard that Rachel Tucker would make making her maiden voyage on Broadway in The Last Ship I decided that I had to sail across the Atlantic to see it for myself. I then concluded that this epic boat journey would eat into my show watching time so I flew Virgin Atlantic instead, leaving me with plenty of time for a Broadway binge.

So since I’d Do Anything to see Rachel perform, and seeing her in The Last Ship was The Reason for my trip to New York, it’s fairly safe to assume that this review is going to be fairly Rachel focussed.  (The fact it’s on the Rachel Tucker FanBlog might also have given you a clue).  So let’s get the inevitable “Rachel is fantastic” part of the review out of the way:

Rachel is fantastic.  On a superficial level, the red hair really suits her and I loved that her costumes consisted mostly of skinny jeans. She does the best Geordie accent of the cast (ignoring Jimmy Nail who isn’t doing an accent so much as being Jimmy Nail) and her singing is, as ever, sublime.   I genuinely think that she has the best number of the entire show in “If you ever see me talking to a sailor”.  Not only is the song a catchy tango which shows off a bit of her belting, but the staging is brilliant and Rachel pulls off some nifty moves which I can only describe as “glassography”.  Her acting is also brilliant, even in scenes where she doesn’t have much dialogue.

On that note, I may be biased, but I don’t think she gets enough stage time. And she certainly doesn’t have enough songs. What she does, she does brilliantly, but I was left wanting more. (I’m not necessarily asking for them to hoist her into the air astride a broomstick but could they not have considered a Titanic style moment at the bow of the ship?) In all seriousness though, there are some moments which I thought could have been enhanced by a bit more Meg.  She spends a long time on stage in silence as “What say you Meg?” is sung to her.  I can see why they chose this to be a solo but I thought it had real potential as a duet, with Meg’s part voicing her internal monologue as she reflects on what is being sung to her.  Meg also has a huge choice to make at the very end of the show and I thought this was again crying out for some sort of gut-wrenching ballad where Rachel could really let it rip.  So much so that I was really surprised when the chorus broke into what was obviously the final number without her having sung again.

So, what about the rest of the show?  The plot is pretty simple. The teenage Gideon turns his back on the family tradition of working in the shipyards and runs off to become a sailor, leaving girlfriend Meg behind in Wallesend. Gideon returns 15 years later upon his father’s death to find Meg raising her 15 year old son, Tom, with her new boyfriend, Arthur. Cue love triangle between Gideon, Meg and Arthur.

This is all set against the backdrop of the closure of the shipyard in which most of the men of the town work (except Arthur who has a fancy new job at the company which wants to close the yard down and open a salvage business instead). Rallied by the local priest, they join together to build one last ship, on which they intend to sail off into the sunset For Good.  This is where you really need to suspend your disbelief. The issue of how they get the funds to build the ship is dealt with, but it’s really not very clear what they’re going to do with it (or themselves) afterwards.

There will be inevitable comparisons with things like Billy Elliot. In fact, a couple behind me noted that it was very Billy and seemed disappointed about the lack of dancing.  The most obvious comparison on Broadway right now is probably Kinky Boots. Again, though, that has a lot more dancing and is generally showier than The Last Ship.  I actually saw Kinky Boots the day after The Last Ship and can honestly say that I far preferred The Last Ship. It’s more subtle and the humour, whilst not laugh out loud stuff, is very British.  It might not have the dancing boy or troupe of fabulous drag queens to stand out against the backdrop of working class doom and gloom, but it doesn’t need them.  The thing that stands out is the music.

The set and staging are also really impressive.  I loved the pool of water at the front of the stage and the way they created the ship for the final scene. There’s some very simple, but powerful, choreography, especially at the end of the first Act.  There’s also a lot of rather less subtle foot-stomping and glass smashing (although not during the aforementioned glassography section).

Dodgy Geordie accents aside, the cast is generally excellent.  I was particularly impressed by Collin Kelly-Sordelet who plays both Tom and the young Gideon.  Fred Applegate was also great in the time honoured role of inebriated, foul-mouthed, but generally loveable priest.   Sally Ann Triplett is great as Peggy but I rather got the impression that this was a bit part that had been created just to even up the gender balance in a fairly testosterone heavy production. I generally prefer my musicals to be led by a strong female cast, but I actually thought this might have been better if they’d dropped Peggy and made Meg a Meatier part.

Overall, The Last Ship could do with plugging a few plot holes to ensure it remains seaworthy, but it’s a great musical nonetheless and I hope that it makes its way across to our shores very soon – with its leading lady at the helm of course.
